Chapter One:
The Sorting Hat
The grounds were covered in snow. The handful of students who decided to stay at Hogwarts for the holidays was seen
throwing snow balls at each other. Harry, of course, stayed at Hogwarts for the holidays. Ron had joined him. Hermione, who
was supposed to go skiing in France with her parents decided to stay behind as, this year, Hogwarts was participating to a
student exchange program with the famous Salem School of Sorcery, an American Institution similar to Hogwarts. This year,
it was the Americans students’ turn to visit England for 6 months. They were to be sorted, follow classes with the house
they would belong to, and also take end of year exams.
“I’m really excited to see how much the Americans student know” wondered Hermione in the Gryffindor
common room.
“Probably less
than us, I hear Americans aren’t very bright” answered Ron.
“Don’t be
silly Ron. They are as intelligent as I am, and certainly more intelligent than you.” replied Hermione, angered.
Ron blushed and did not
say another word about the American students until their arrival at Hogwarts.
*****
The foreign students were to arrive on the last day of the Christmas holidays, on January 7th. Hogwarts students were
arrived on the 5th, to properly greet the guests. Malfoy was heard complaining about this, of course. Something
everyone had been expecting.
“Father is fiercely against this student exchange” he would solemnly declare to Pansy Parkinson. “It
is none sense to allow foreigners to enter Hogwarts. Especially Americans. They have absolutely no culture!”
Finally, the 7th of January arrived. All Hogwarts students were out in the cold of the early evening, in
front of the castle. Professor McGonagall was walking among the students, making sure all Gryffindor students looked impeccable.
Students started scanning the horizon, wondering how the Americans would be arriving. Then, a flock of carriages appeared
in the distance. One by one, they parked in front of the castle. The first person to appear was Phyre Rabbitus, the headmaster
of Salem, who Dumbledore greeted warmly.
“My dear Phyre, you are as lovely as ever” said Dumbledore, kissing Phyre’s hand.
“And you are as flattering as ever, dear Albus” replied Phyre, bowing.
One by one, students came out of the carriages looking around, curiously. As they proceeded inside, Dumbledore and
Phyre in the lead, the Americans were craning their necks to take in the Entrance Hall. The Hogwarts students followed, staring
at their guests, politely curious. The party entered the Great Hall. Teachers filled their seat at the staff table, and the
students joined their house tables. But the foreigners stood by the door with their headmaster. McGonagall appeared carrying
the Sorting Hat on its stool and placed it where everyone could see. The Americans were lined up in front of the stool in
a rather orderly fashion by a couple of students who strangely seemed older than the others. Any excited buzz was running
through the great Hall when McGonagall loudly cleared her throat.
“As a custom, new students who enter Hogwarts have to be sorted in houses. The four houses at Hogwarts are Gryffindor,
Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. To be sorted, each student will have to place the Sorting Hat in his or her head and
await the Hat’s decision. He or she will then sit down at the table of house he or she has been assigned to. Now, I
will call your names and you can proceed to the Sorting.”
The American students were casting nervous looks around the Great Hall as to size up each house by the appearance of
the students in it.
“I hope that cute girl with brown curly hair will get sorted in Gryffindor” said Ron, looking at a girl
named Bella Rosov.
“Hey, Bella, check out that freckly dude staring at us” whispered Fannie.
“Yeah, I hope we won’t get sorted in his house” replied Bella.
“Azrial Typhoon” started McGonagall.
Az proceeded to the stool, thrusting his chest forward confidently. He placed the Sorting Hat on this head and waited
a few seconds.
“Let’s see what we have here” whispered the Sorting Hat. “A smart alleck, I see… What
else… Expelled from pre-school. A mind for trouble making and foolishness. I think I will sort you in… GRYFFINDOR!”
ended the Sorting hat.
Az stood up, looking proud of himself and sat down at the Gryffindor table between Ginny and Fred Weasley.
“Hi there, baby” he said to Ginny who grinned at him and engaged a quiet conversation.
From afar, Lily Abott was looking at the scene, teary eyed.
“Bella Rosov” said McGonagall.
The pretty girl with curly brown hair that Ron mentioned a few minutes ago walked towards the stool and sat down with
the hat on top of her head.
“Bella… Rosov…” swooned Ron.
“What a clever mind this is” whispered the hat. “A lot of talent, yes. But also a need to prove yourself,
even though you try and deny it. I see that although you work very hard to achieve your goals, you really enjoy bossing people
around… But where to put you? Ravenclaw would suit you best, but as you don’t want to be in the same house as
Ronald Weasley it will be GRYFFINDOR!”
Bella stood up, scowling at the Sorting hat which was grinning. She reluctantly sat at the Gryffindor table, aware
that Ron was eyeing her.
“Fanny Johns” continued McGonagall.
As Fanny proceeds to the stool, Ron moves over to Bella.
“Hi, my name is Weasley, Ron Weasley”
“And my name is Bond, James Bond”
“I though it was Bel…”
“Oh, never mind” snapped Bella.
“I just… I’m sorry if I offended you” said Ron, frowning as he moved to back his chair. At
the same moment the Hat shouted “GRYFFINDOR!” and Fanny sat down next to Bella.
“Gabby Larue” McGonagall called out.
The Great Hall started giggling as Gabby cast dark, heinous looks at the people who were laughing at her name. The
great Hall quickly grew quiet again. Gabby sat down on the stool, a bored expression on her face.
“Let’s see…” started the Hat.
“No need to, I know already” interrupted Gabby.
“But I haven’t…”
“Shush”
“But I…”
“Zip!”
“But…!”
“Wrong answer! SLYTHERIN!” cried out Gabby.
Gabby quickly stood up and before anyone realized what had just happened, Gabby sat herself at the Slytherin table.
A few people applauded, confused.
“Er, well next… Hermione Otter” called out McGonagall taken aback by Gabby’s maneuver.
Hermy cast nervous looks around, and sat on the stool.
“Hermione, I’ve already sorted you in Gryffindor” said the Hat.
“But, I’m not Hermione. I’m Hermionie” replied Hermy.
“Are you now? Sorry then… let’s see… name similar to Hermione, about the same age, likes Harry
Potter…GRYFFINDOR!”
Although she wasn’t sure what had just been said, Hermy sat down at the Gryffindor table, next to Fanny.
“JK, um… JK!” said McGonagall.
At the Gryffindor, Hermione who was sitting close to Hermionie leaned over the group from Salem.
“Your name is Hermione?” asked Hermione.
“Well, Hermionie, spelled with “ie” in the end”, answer Hermy.
“Oh, mine is spelt with an “e”. What do you think we should do?”
“About what? Our names?” asked Hermy “Well…. I guess you could call me Hermy, if that can clear
things up”.
“Good idea, thank you!” she added, and turned back to her discussion with Ron and Harry.
“GRYFFINDOR!” announced the hat, and JK sat down at the Gryffindor table.
“A bit crowed this year, eh?” said Ron to Harry.
“I won’t be the one complaining about it” said Harry staring at Fanny.
“Kevin Zeus, or, er… Zeus… Kevin?” called McGonagall.
Without correcting her, Kevin turned to McGonagall.
“If I don’t like the house I’m in, can I get sorted again?”
“No.” answered McGonagall sternly.
“Alright, just wondering…” he mumbles while putting the Hat on.
Meanwhile, the Gryffindor table was buzzing with excitement. Ginny and Az were still deep in conversation.
“So, in America, Quidditch is called… Quittmeek?” asked Ginny, confused.
“That’s right, American Quidditch is the REAL Quidditch. Yours is just an imitation” declared Az
proudly.
“Excuse me!” snapped Ginny, then she turned away from Az and went back to talking with Neville.
“Brit girls are so frigid…” mumbled Az
“GRYFFINDOR!” announced the Hat.
Kevin left the stool and took a seat next to Fanny.
“Isn’t it such a coincidence that we’re all in the same house?” said Fannie.
“Yeah, such a coincidence…” replied Kevin, smirking.
“Lily Abott” said McGonagall.
Timid Lily walked up to the stool, a shy smile upon her face, her eyes fixed on Az at the Gryffindor table.
“Ok, I see that you are very shy, but hard working with a good heart, therefore it will be HUF...”
“NO! Please not Hufflepuff! Please Mr Hat! Please, please, please!”
“Your supplications will not make me change my mind, Missy, you belong in Huff…”
“But, I swear that I’ll be a great Gryffindor! I’m like, courageous and foolish and stuff, and I’d
do anything for my friend, even go out with them instead of spending an afternoon with Az.”
“Well, that’s true, but still, you would be better in Huff…”
“But pleaaaaaseee! I’m begging you, pleeeeease! Let me be in Gryffindor!” wept Lily.
“Fine! Just stop your whining! GRYFFINDOR!”
Lily’s face lightened up and she leaped to the seat next to Az’s at the Gryffindor table.
“Slyff Twen…” said McGonagall looking closely at her parchment. “Yes, Slyff Twenties is right…”
Slyff got up to the stool and positioned the Hat on her head.
“Well, hello there cutie...”
“Ok, that’s just creepy”, said Slyff disgusted
“Why, are you against going out with Hat? I’m not as old as I look”
“Ok, I think I’m gonna go now…” said Slyff lifting her arms to remove the Hat.
“Wait! Ok, I’ll behave… But I have a deal for you….”
“Hmm… OK…” answered Slyff, hesitant.
“You can pick whatever house you want to be in and in exchange I get… a kiss on the lips!”
“Ok, granted that I’d accept this disgusting deal, how could I possibly kiss you since you don’t
even have a mouth?”
“What about the brim? You could just pretend it’s a mouth”
“This is ridiculous!” she answered taking the hat off.
“OK! OK!” it yelled in a desperate attempt to get her attention “SLYTHERIN!”
Slyff joined Gabby at the Slytherin table looking deeply irritated.
“What’s wrong, Slyff?” wondered Gabby.
“Don’t even ask….” snapped Slyff.
“Vagrant Foley” declared McGonagall.
Vagrant walked over to the stool confident, while all the girls in the Hall swooned. He winked at a few of them, grinning
seductively. He placed the hat on his head.
Back at the Slythering table, Gabby was craning her neck to see who was in her house. When she laid her eyes on Malfoy,
her face lightened up and a smile spread across her face. But the shouting of the Sorting Hat (“GRYFFINDOR!”)
Vagrant sat down at the Gryffindor table with Bella and Fanny.
“Victoria Grande!” called McGonagall.
Vickie stepped towards the Hat, staring at it as if it was a gelatinous monster, then turned to McGonagall.
“Say, this won’t suck out my brain once I put it on?”
“Just put it on you silly girl!” snapped McGonagall.
Vickie quickly sat on the stool and put the Hat on as quickly as possible.
“Let’s get this over with GRYFFINDOR!”
Vickie ran to the Gryffindor table and sat next to Lily.
The Hall broke into a last applause but McGonagall asked for silence.
“As you can see, there still are a few people left that have not been sorted.” She nudged to the few people
who lined up the students before the Sorting Hat ceremony. “They are not students, but supervisors. They have accompanied
the students to help them adjust to our classes and assist them with their homework if needed. As there are only 2 students
in the Slytherin house, there will only be one supervisor out of the three who will join Slytherin”.
Gwen stepped forward and turned her face from McGonagall to Snape who was sitting at the staff table with his arms
crossed. She batted her eyelashes, but he seemed oblivious to it.
“Mrs. Gwen…”
“Excuse me, professor”, interrupted Gwen. “It’s Miss, I am currently single and available”
she declared, looking intently at Snape.
“Well, alright, Ms Gwen Klug will supervise the students in Slytherin. She and her students will reside in the
Slytherin dormitory, eating at the Slytherin table with her students and will attend classes as she pleases. As for the students
in Gryffindor, they will be supervised, by Ms. Anna Blanche Foley, Ms Nabiki and er… Shanky Longteeth”
“Yo, dat’s ‘iight, dat mah name, Shankeh.” said
Shanky.
“Ms. Foley and… Longteeth will be staying in the Gryffindor dormitories with their students.”
Professor McGonagall showed them to the house tables and took the Sorting Hat and stool out of the Great Hall, reappearing
seconds later to sit down at the staff table. As McGonagall sat, Dumbledore stood up and all students went quiet.
“Welcome!” He said spreading his arms towards the Hall “to our American friends!”
The Hall broke into frenetic applauds, even the Slytherin table.
“As you know, the students from Salem School of Sorcery will be spending six months with us. And we rejoice in
their presence. Let me introduce you the headmaster of the Salem School, Mrs Phyre Rabbitus”
The students applauded politely as Phyre bowed to the Hall.
“Now that this is settled, tuck in!”
The Great Hall sounded with the clatter of fork and knifes. Out of all the tables, the Gryffindor table was the loudest.
The Salem students were acquainting with the Hogwarts students. But Lily’s attention was turned to Az who was sitting
across from her.
“I saw you chatting with that red hair girl” she whispered to him.
“Yeah, she has to the hots for me” he said casually.
Lily turned back to her plate, a frown on her face.
On the other end of the table, Shanky and Oliver Wood were having a heated discussion
“So, I said to him, I said: “Yo gimme dat blade, or Imma keel you dead!’” said Shanky before
laughing heartedly.
“Yes, I… understand, but could I have the salt, please?” he asked shyly.
“Course yah can ‘Liveh, yah man main man now!” she added and tapped Oliver on the shoulder so hard
she almost dislocated it.
“Don’t worry”, ABF whispers in Oliver’s ear. “She only speaks gangstah when she’s
nervous”. But it didn’t seem to make him feel any better.
*****
Once the feast was over, the students returned to their respective houses. The
American students marveled at the castle as they went on.
“Man, I’ve never seen anything like it” said Fanny.
“Word, das some killah crib” said Shanky, excited.
“Yes, anyway… as I was saying, I am Adonna Sterling, and I am the Head Girl of the Gryffindor house. The
entrance to the Gryffindor Tower is concealed behind a portrait of a Fat Lady on the 7th floor. “
As Adonna was speaking, they found themselves in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady.
“To enter you will need to speak the password, and the password is ‘Stepladder’”
The portrait opened up, to the amazement of the Salem students. They all stepped in and found themselves in the circular
common room.
“On my left are the girls’ dormitories. And on my right are the boys’ dormitories. Your rooms will
be at the top most of the tower. The common room is for everyone’s use, so you can study here or just relax here –quietly-
any time you wish. DO you have any questions?”
Hermy looked around her fellow students and raised her hand.
“I was wondering… where is the bathroom?” she asked.
Adonna paused to think for a few seconds, scratching her head.
“You know, I’m not really sure. I usually just get dressed and go straight to breakfast”
“And how long have you been here?” asked JK
“Oh, about 7 years now” said Adonna. “If that’s all, I think we can all go to bed! If you girls
need anything, let me know. Otherwise, I’ll see you tomorrow at breakfast!”
Adonna went up the circular staircase that leads to the girls’ dormitory soon followed by the other students.
The boys went up their own staircase apparently charmed to be able to go to class without showering.
